Received an email with his first proposal on 16/10 and 26/10. Basically, he presented the functionality and how the children will use it in making a game. According to him. the main feature of this authoring tool is that you can do nearly all things by
dragging the items to your level and place it wherever you want.
He has put his ideas on a typical workflow on how to make a game using the tool including the background, adding object (moving or still objects) and an ideal jump-and-run game authoring tool.
Here are some comments from me (replied 01/11):
1. The idea of using ‘drag-and-drop’ features in the tools should be support by concrete reasons. This can be done by looking at few researches that look into designing interface for children.
2. To make the idea clearer, summarize the steps using flow chart or any appropriate tools, so that, people will understand more on game making flow.
3. He did mentioned on ‘kids with their endless possibilities in making games”. I agreed. In other words, if you want to focus your tools on making the ‘only jump-and-run games’, you can insert the element of education where the tool has the ability in balancing the elements of instruction design (education) and the elements of the right interface design for children (entertainment/fun by making games). I don’t want people to have the idea that the tool is to simple or have a limited creativity for children in designing games.
4. Perhaps, when we put the educational element in the tools, we can suggest that the tool can be used as one of the teaching and learning tools in the classroom in any subject matters, either mathematics or science.
5. I agreed on his opinion that the design should look more playful.
